The New York Art Lottery is an alternative nonprofit system that aims to support artists and their communities economically while offering a legal, transparent structure for redistributing funds through chance-based games. Via seasonal lotteries, patrons can pay as little as 1 dollar for a chance to win an artwork.

Each entry costs 1 dollar. Participants can purchase as many entries as they like, or make one free entry. At the end of the designated period, the pool closes and a winner is chosen.

The money breakdown:
  • 10% off the top goes to NYAL’s operational fees [expense sheet]
  • Of the remaining amount:
    • 70% goes to the artist
    • 30% goes to a community organization or fundraiser of the artist’s choosing
